Payne, W. J. (University of Georgia, Athens), and R. L. Todd. Flavin-linked dehydrogenation of ether glycols by cell-free extracts of a soil bacterium. J. Bacteriol. 91:1533-1536. 1966.-Cell-free extracts of bacterium TEG-5 grown on tetraethylene glycol dehydrogenated a variety of ether glycols and nonylphenoxy and secondary alcohol ethoxy derivatives. Nicotinamide nucleotides did not serve as electron acceptors, but ferricyanide was effective. Dialysis of crude extract depressed activity with tetraethylene glycol, which was restored then by flavine adenine dinucleotide (FAD) or boiled extract supernatant fluid (BES) but not by other flavins. Precipitatation of extract protein at pH 4.0 at 80% ammonium sulfate saturation dissociated FAD and yielded an inactive fraction. Activity was restorable by FAD and BES but not by other flavins. Ethylene glycol was not dehydrogenated by the acid ammonium sulfate fraction with FAD. Atabrine inhibited tetraethylene glycol oxidation, and the inhibition was relieved by FAD but not by other flavins. Tergitols which have sulfated ethoxy side chains on secondary alcohols were not dehydrogenated, but those with free ethoxy side chains on identical alcohols were.

Bacterial utilization of ether glycols.
A soil bacterium capable of using oligo- and polyethylene glycols and ether alcohols as sole sources of carbon for aerobic growth was isolated. The effects of substituent groups added to the ether bonds on the acceptability of the compounds as substrates were studied. Mechanisms for the incorporation of two-carbon compounds were demonstrated by the observation that acetate, glyoxylate, ethylene...

1. The aerobic metabolism of cyclohexanecarboxylic acid by a bacterium isolated from garden soil (Acinetobacter anitratum) was investigated. 2. Evidence for the formation of cyclohex-1-ene-1-carboxylate, 2-hydroxycyclohexanecarboxylate and pimelate when either cell suspensions or cell-free extracts were incubated in the presence of cyclohexanecarboxylic acid is presented. 3. Crude cell-free ext...
متن کاملEvaluation of anti-malarial activity of Artemisia turcomanica and A. kopetdaghensis by cell-free β-hematin formation assay
Background and objectives:The plants of genus Artemisia (Asteraceae) have been conventionally used for prevention and medication of a number of ailments. In the present research, ten extracts with different polarities from aerial parts of two Artemisia species, A. kopetdaghensis and A. turcomanica were evaluated for their potential anti-malar...
متن کاملLectin Histochemical Study of Rat Reproductive Tissues Treated with Ether Fraction of Anethum graveolens L. Extracts
Introduction: Nowadays, there is special interest in finding a new contraceptive drug with high safety and fewer side effects. Investigations have shown that dill (Anethum graveolens L.) can be used either as a menstrual cycle regulator or contraceptive. Since cell surface terminal sugars have crucial roles in oocyte maturation, fertilization and implantation, in this study we investigated the ...
متن کاملAerobic Degradation of N-Methyl-4-Nitroaniline (MNA) by Pseudomonas sp. Strain FK357 Isolated from Soil
N-Methyl-4-nitroaniline (MNA) is used as an additive to lower the melting temperature of energetic materials in the synthesis of insensitive explosives. Although the biotransformation of MNA under anaerobic condition has been reported, its aerobic microbial degradation has not been documented yet. A soil microcosms study showed the efficient aerobic degradation of MNA by the inhabitant soil mic...
